On Monday July 20th 2009, Michael Pratt, the former LDS seminary leader at Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah, appeared in 4th District Court to be formally presented with 21 felony charges that stem from allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct with a 16-year-old student at the Lone Peak High School seminary program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Additional story published by the Salt Lake Tribune.
The charges were first raised during his previous court appearance on Friday July 17th, when Pratt appeared in 4th District Court in Provo. They consist of 10 counts of forcible sodomy, seven counts of object rape and two counts of rape — all first-degree felonies. He was also charged with two second-degree felonies of forcible sex abuse. He remains free on $20,000 bail which was granted during his first hearing on July 13th as reported by the Deseret News (Jul 13) and KSL Channel 5 (Jul 13); the other conditions of bail included turning over an external hard drive and his laptop computer issued to him by the LDS seminary to detectives, and agreeing not to go near his former seminary office or near a mine in Eureka where some of the alleged sexual abuse took place.
Conviction on all charges could result in life in prison.
Police arrested Pratt July 9th after they received information that he had allegedly been checking the girl out of school without her parents' permission and taking her to various locations for sexual encounters. These locations are all specified in my previous post. The alleged sexual abuse began May 8th and continued until June 25th. The investigation also revealed hundreds of text messages sent between the two, including some that were sexually explicit.
Pratt's only public reaction so far was at his very first court hearing on July 13th, when he said, "I am hopeful that the truth will be fully presented at the appropriate time," During the July 20th hearing, a number of supporters of Pratt showed up. Former students came to court to show their love and support, and said their lives have been changed by Pratt's teaching. "We weren't here to find out the facts," student Sierra Huddleston said. "We were here to support and that won't change."
In the comments section to the July 20th Deseret News story, Sierra Huddleston came under some fire for her seemingly-uncritical expression of support. So she posted a clarifying comment (typos left intact):
Sierra Huddlston | 11:57 a.m. July 20, 2009
I was there this morning- Let me restate what I said- I DO NOT support his actions and negative choices. that should be obvious. He has a long hard road ahead. However, He was my teacher this past sememster- and the man I knew still has the same heart. he taught truth and that doesnt change. I support him in fixing this, I support him with prayer and fasting and beleiving him. Its terrible, sad, and wrong, but I knew this man-HE CHANGED life for my brother and I. I would be in a very different place in life without him. Do not twist my words and have a little faith in a human man who made a mistake.
Pratt qualifies for a court-appointed defense attorney because he lost his job after the allegations surfaced. He also supports a wife and three children and has no equity in his rental home. He has not yet entered a plea. The case will now be transferred to Judge Christine Johnson in the American Fork Justice Court, where his next hearing is scheduled for August 18th at 8:30 A.M. He will probably enter a plea at that time.
Upon Pratt's initial arrest, the LDS Church immediately removed him from his position as seminary leader. However, it is unlikely they will take action against his Church membership until he either pleads guilty or is convicted, although they might pull his temple recommend. The LDS Church does not customarily publicize the results of disciplinary council hearings. While the circumstances do indeed look damning, the presumption of innocence remains in effect. But what I can't understand is why Pratt - or any other teacher - would take a kid out of school on his own authority in the first place. If Pratt is innocent, then he was incredibly naive.
Brecka Pierce ring a bell to anyone hahah
ReplyDeleteyeah but thats messed up to name names
ReplyDeleteeveryone knows its Brecka Pierce obviously its not some secret! everyones talking about it
ReplyDeleteIf you people even knew half of it, you wouldn't say that.
ReplyDeleteI feel so bad for brother Pratt's family, but I also feel so sorry for Brecka and her family. They have been through so many hard times. I can honestly say they are the strongest people I know.
It really is so sad to me that people are so quick to judge. You hear things like this and make assumptions and automatically say how messed up the person is.
Put yourself in their shoes.
Had you been through the same things and been put in the same situation, who's to say you would handle things any different?? Realize that you really DON'T know the whole story.
If you guys knew even some of the things that Pratt said to her, you would be DISGUSTED.
Point is, there is sooo much you don't know. Maybe Brecka has a history. Who doesn't have a history? Who are we to point fingers?
It's not our place to judge. Everyone faces the consequences of their actions. Whether you're the one at fault or not, what good does it do to have your peers making things more miserable for you?? Since when do people respond well, if at all, to criticism? People respond to positivity. It makes a world of difference.
I hope so much that, for everyone's sake, we'll all make an effort to be more understanding. Even if it's just understanding that we don't, and maybe won't, understand.
It is not our place to judge.
You really just never know the whole story...
Most people think they do, and/or don't care to find out.
Few are hearty and sincere in understanding or making the effort to..
"He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."
I think it is ridiculous that people are bad mouthing her and putting her name all over the Internet. Leave her alone. This has got to be a hard time for her without people saying these horrible things about her. I support her and I hope if she decides to come back to school that everyone will show her love and understanding.
ReplyDeleteI am SHOCKED & discusted by the person who said the girls name (the first blog comment made) and then ended with "hahah." What kind of horrible young person would give the poor girls name? TO YOU: have you ever heard of the Law of the Harvest? By being so cruel as to publish her alleged name. (if it is even her?) Obviously in an reprehensible, vindictive manner may I add. SHAME ON YOU. Something as horrible as you have done to this young women by putting her name on the internet will come back to you many times over! THAT is the Law of the harvest! Where is your compassion for her? I feel sorry for you & for your parents that you have done such a shameful thing! This speaks volumes about whoever you are.
ReplyDeleteAre you serious!?! I'm sick of people acting like she is the victim. I know Mike personally and he is a very spiritual, kind, and caring man. He was trying to help her change. He's not the kind of guy who just targets girls. He made a huge mistake and never should have let her get to him but it's not like there is no fault on her part. It's sad that she ruined his life and family by being a slut. He's facing LIFE in prison.
ReplyDeleteHe was the adult. She does not deserve to have her name blasted on the Internet. She is a minor. Leave this girl alone. he screwed up and did horrible things. No she is not completely blameless but he was the adult. It was his fault. He should be behind bars so that he cannot do this to other teenage girls. He was in a power of authority and he took advantage of it. Her name should have never been brought up. Whoever posted her name...should be ashamed of yourselves.
ReplyDeleteSo, if it had been YOUR 16 year old daughter, would she have been the "slut" & "she ruined HIS life"? 16 years old vs. 37 years old. Who was the adult here? Who was the one that should have had the maturity, spiritual & otherwise to not get started in the first place. I've read several blog comments about HER being the problem here. I'm sure if it had been YOUR 16 yr. old daughter, you would see things in a whole different light, perhaps the way the law sees it. And by the way,a "very spiritual" man in the real sense of the word would have never lied on the phone to get her out of school or sent perverse text messages. The "spirit" would have prompted him to HANG UP THE PHONE, go home, hold his wife, play with his kids & the next morning talk to his supervisor for guidance & council! That is one VERY wrapped sense of spirituality. Thank you, no.
ReplyDeleteAs a former educator at Lone Peak I can assure you that most of what you are hearing is false. Let the legal system deal with the adult. Whether she seduced him or not, he was in a position of authority over her. Why is no one wondering how a seminary teacher was able to get her out of school without the administration or her parents being notified. The seminary is in an even more honored position by that community than the school for this to be able to happen. Hopefully someone at the high school is being investigated as an accomplice. And the seminary, which is a separate organization from the high school will be banned from doing anything similar in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhat a disgusting act to place the minor's name online.
ReplyDeleteFirst, it's surprising what people end up choosing to do this kind of stuff, especially to a minor. Teens, especially girls do not have the experience typically needed to handle or understand such situation. A 37 year old adult does however. There's a reason that law is in place. And there is a reason that it gives consequences to the adult.
Secondly, because he was the adult in the situation even if she were attempting to seduce him HE is of age to take the actions necessary to avoid anything like this. HE is experienced enough in life to say no.
Third, ESPECIALLY if he is the spiritual pillar people are saying they know him to be.
Could he be innocent? Yes. But if there is enough evidence to convict him otherwise and a person still bellows about his innocence, there be wool over their eyes. Shame on you for casting stones simply because it would upset your expectations of a person's reputation.
Let me just say that i have known this girl since the day i was born, and i know she is a good person and everyone needs to just leave her alone and let her and her family heal, and let the police deal with the rest of it.
ReplyDelete17 years olds know better she got herself and him in trouble and screwed everyone over it went two ways. 17 year olds know the choices they're making, face reality and quit being in denial.
ReplyDeletehaha well, brecka pierce was already dubbed a slut at lphs. she's just trying to get everyone on her side. shes playing the "poor me" role of this. she is dusgusting. i hear that she was the one enticing HIM.
ReplyDeletei blame both of them, it was a mutual thing, although he is being charged with rape does not mean it was literally rape. the only reason it is is because she is a minor. she knows better i know brecka and know how she is and is a sexual girl, but he is also a married man and knows better also. its sad and should be left alone because no one really knows the real story.
ReplyDeleteTo the authors of the Aug.25th & Aug. 26th post comments. Really...? Are you both for real? Calling this young lady all of those vile names. Did your mothers teach you how to talk like that? I wouldn't eat with those mouths if I were you!
ReplyDeleteYou must both be completely perfect to judge her SO harshly. Why do any of us need God as a judge when we have people like the both of you. SHE DIDN'T BREAK THE LAW! He did! She is still considerd a minor!! It could have been you!! If any of my own children were to EVER act the way you two have on this blog page, I would be so ashamed to be your parent.
Clean your own closet before you attempt to clean out hers!
Anyone remember the 8th grade cheetoh incident?
ReplyDeletebahahaha oh man i forgot about that cheetoh incident til now.. everyone knows how brecka is.. all these people are sticking up for brecka or are saying if i was your parents i would be ashamed for what you are saying but if it were your 17 year old child would you still be blaming everyone else or maybe your all one of those alpine snobby moms that say "My child would never do that" guarantee there are so many of you parents that dont know every move your child has made. She's 17 not 5 she knows right from wrong
ReplyDeleteThis is a known fact. FACT! brecka pirce fingered herself with a choeetoh in 8th grade in the lunch room when she lived in texas. i saw it happen. if she was a slut then, obviously all the sexual conduct was consensual. Shes always been a hoe
ReplyDeletescrew the old rumors, this is WAY DIFFERENT AND WORSE. they are both adults, she was just as much at fault as he was. thats discusting. on BOTH PARTS. you dont just have your principal take you out of school and say OH YEAH OK lets go. if you dont wanna go and dont want to take part in those actions, its simple, YOU DONT
ReplyDeleteThey definitely are both at blame here. I'm not saying that it's okay for anyone to call Brecka those terrible names or to point fingers at Pratt. She's been known to be a vixen and he was in a position to get close emotionally and physically to his students. She took advantage of him, someone who would listen to her, when she was having probably some sort of self esteem issues. And he took advantage of his authority and position as a 'counselor'. She's young, but not young enough to not realize what she was getting both of them into.
ReplyDeleteThere was another named minor all over the news in Utah: Elizabeth Smart - I'm sure the folks here posting would agree that she was to blame for enticing that crazy homeless guy? She really has that victim act down, just like Brecka!
ReplyDeleteFor an educator, Pratt is not too good at counting? 1 or 2 more years and his sausage could've accompanied that "Cheetoh" without the risk of 21 felonies...
ahhh.....the power of cheese!?!?
Sorry to dig up a post several weeks old...
ReplyDeleteSince I don't know what happened, why, and the characters of those involved, this comment is in regards to this general situation (i.e. older men and under-age girls having sexual relations).
I knew of a similar situation where an older male hooked up with an under-age female. I knew both parties involved and had first-hand knowledge of how everything happened. I can definitely say that in that situation, the girl was a "seducer" - and I would even say a "predator". The man did get convicted, and rightly so. But when are we going to start holding the girl accountable? There should be an investigation into the character and intent of the girl, and if found "guilty", she should be punishable by law as well (although to a much lesser extent than the adult).
Mothers (and fathers) have absolutely no clue how sexualized their daughters (and sons) are these days! (I am of this younger generation - I know). If a minor breaks a law, there are consequences. Why is there no consequence for an underage girl who goes around seducing people? She doesn't have to think twice, because if it all ends badly, she won't be held accountable.
Brecka Pierce + cheetoe + vagina = something the students of knox jr high will never forget.
ReplyDeleteFor the person who posted my sister's name. I feel very sorry for you. For those referring to an incident that didn't even happen from junior high.. I feel horrible for you. Everybody is entitled their opinion. You can choose to believe whatever you would like. But going online and posting things that you have absolutely no idea about is completely ridiculous. If your purpose is to hurt somebody that you don't even know, or that you have only heard things about, my prayers go out to you. Whether she did all these things you want to accuse her of or not, that doesn't make what he did okay. For months now I have wanted to post comments.. thanking those who are praying for my family as well as the Pratt family.. and letting others know how disgusted I am with the things that they can say when they are in no way shape or form involved with any of this nor do they know anything that happened. I decided that not everyone will know the truth, and that is okay. People will take sides no matter what. But to actually put my sister's name out there, whether you think everybody knows it already or not, I don't even have the words to explain to you how I feel or how this will come back for you.
ReplyDeletei love you. stay strong gorgeous
ReplyDeleteBrecka Pierce is a very troubled young lady. She has had a hard family life because her family is broken. Her Step Father, Not FATHER, is now at her side, acting like the distressed male figure she so desperately needs. He deserves an academy award for his performance. The same goes for her. She loved every minute of the media and court attention. I should know as I go to every court hearing. When Brecka showed up to court, followed by her friends the first thing out of her mouth was: "I'm so glad you're here, this is going to be fun." She has ruined a family, and she's having a blast. Her attention grabbing performance towards Michael Pratt are evident. Because she lacked the proper male figure in her life that she tossed herself at the first male who would. Unfortunately this was Michael Pratt. I have no remorse for her or her family as they are playing up to her games. Her parents are now giving her the attention she so wanted by "believing" this story, they even show it with the new car they gave her. Just know that Vipers come and strike quickly. I will do everything in my power to make the truth known. As the local media will do anything for a juicy story. Even if that means the truth should be hidden away to make themselves look good and sell more papers.
ReplyDeleteOk here is the LOGICAL way of looking at it, we are humans we are made to have sexual urges regardless of what age difference there is between a man and a woman. On the logical aspect of the situation, they simply did what humans do, we act on urges.... if your mormon you learn that fighting against the "natural man" is what were supposed to do. Which could and may be a very good thing. ALL of you are human, infact if I put you with the ugliest man or woman and told you that both of you are to be forced into a marriage and make it work, eventually because of our human instinct to keep the human species alive, we become adapted to that person and become mentally, emotionally and physically attracted to them. we are made to want to have sex with the each other that just how it is, thats why if your mormon, your mom and dad and church leaders will tell you to never be alone with a boy or girl. Considering the girl is young, when developing new hormones it can be very confusing and difficult to make wise decisions especially since your brain at 16 years old is not developed all the way. That alone can make her act on her impulses instead of thinking logically, and that is why we have parents.....so If you really look at this it doesn't matter if the girl had a "crush" on him or not, he is the adult, he has the authority he should know when something is not okay. At the same time he does have human instincts. I dunno there are a lot of ways to look at this whole situation I just think for a second we can all look at it with no influence on religion, morals or values and just look at it logically and naturally now lets all go hug a tree right?
ReplyDeleteTo the April 16th poster, You obviously know not of what you speak. She was not given a new car, the car was actually purchased new several years ago for her sister to drive.
ReplyDeleteTo the ignorant commentors who described a disgusting act that supposedly occurred when she was in 8th grade in Texas, well news flash, she was in 8th grade in Utah. So what part are you lying about, what happened or where it happened. In any event, you are lying.
The trial is scheduled for June, and everything that Pratt did will come out and be public.
This girl has lost so much as a result of the manipulations of Mr. Pratt. If on the otherhand she was able to get him to turn away from all that he held dear and all that he held to be true, then she must really be something at 16! Get real, he was an adult in a position of trust. He took advantage of her, he broke the law, and he deserves all that is coming to him. I hear convicted sex offenders of underage kids arent well received in prison...happy trails Mike.
Mike Pratt is innocent and Brecka is a vicious liar. I feel sorry for her though because she's carried the lie so far now that if she were to do the right thing and tell the truth, then there would undoubtly be legal action taken against her. She should still do the right thing though, because not to do so is ruining an amazing man and his incredible family.
ReplyDeletedo the right thing brecka.....
it won't hurt as long is it will hurt if you send an innocent man to prison.
Some of you guys are so freaking dumb. Hes freaking 37 years old! He's not innocent. I don't care if a 17 year old girl tried to "seduce" him or not (which I don't believe happened in this case) the fact of the matter is he's 37 years old and when a 17 year old girl appraches a 37 year old, unless the 37 year old is retarded or a perv, which appears to be the case here, he simply walks away and thats the end of it. He deserves to go to prison. Hes going to have a fun 5 years in prison and Im sure he meets an inmate named bubba who finds out he likes little girls! If I was him I'd do everything he can to avoid gen pop!
ReplyDeleteI feel very sorry for his family and am praying for Breaka and her family as well.
I think that everyone who wrote a rude thing about her or him should be ashamed because no one knows the REAL story. If you guys are Mormon i know you now better...come on guys we are taught to be kind, and loving.
ReplyDeleteThere is an obvious discrimination between who supports Brother Pratt, and who supports she-who-must-not-be-named. It is easily concluded that the younger,behind-the-scenes crowd support Brother Pratt and the older,objectively-viewed folks support you-know-who. There are obvious biases that are taking place here, on account of both sides. Maybe the younger crowd should consider, "Ya, Brother Pratt is freaking old, and the no matter how amazing he was, there's a legal system for a reason." And maybe the adults should think about,"Ya he is older, but she is plenty old enough to make her own choices." -and may we all die in ignorance
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time believing that Brecka or Pratt are innocent in this. (Now for those of you that are going to be mad at me for mentioning names. I feel sorry for your ignorance in believing that somehow you can just cover this all up, when this event has quite nearly rocked the nation.) When there are 21 accounts of some sort of illicit interaction between Pratt and Brecka, neither of them are innocent.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad that people even consider in their minds Pratt being innocent because of his "soft heartedness" due to his occupation.
It shocks me that Brecka can hide behind age, and the definition of rape for her innocence. Brecka: 21 times, that's not 1 or 2 but TWENTY ONE. If you truly were overcome by this uncontrollable hormone rage it doesn't happen 21 times without having some form of second thoughts. Not only that but you guys are all right, it is a cruel, hard world out there where everyone has got some sort of family-broken-home issue. People also all experience puberty. Yet somehow this case is extremely uncommon. I have a hard time believing that somehow Brecka is unique and innocent as a result of increasingly common circumstances.
As for those who are bringing up past incidence of Brecka concerning a Cheetoh, I have never heard of this incidence before but the fact that two people can confirm it, brings some validity. Whether that validity is whole or not, I dont know, for all I know it could be completely made up. However, even if it were a lie with every lie there is some grain of truth. Perhaps it's simply the fact that Brecka was a predator or exhibited similar behavior.
Bottom line, horrible acts went down, and no one did the right thing. I would hope that something like this never happens again, but even more so I hope those who have previously commented on this string take some serious time to sit down and reconsider how ridiculous your line of thinking is.

that you too would mature a little bit and realize both the irony and fallaciousness of your thinking. You do realize that YOU TOO are commenting on this blog.

Just so you know. This young lady has moved passed what happened to her. She is a wonderful lady. Married in an LDS temple to one of my mission buddies. She is awesome!
ReplyDeleteWoaaaaahhhhhh.... That's some crazyness to stumble upon... Unsurprised reading this all, the brief time I knew Brecka Pierce would validate most the negative comments about her regarding all this, unfortunately.
ReplyDelete
